Tania Amir Biography

Tania Amir is a prominent Bangladeshi barrister and human rights activist. She is the daughter of Barrister M Amir-ul Islam.

Early Life:

Tania Amir was born on September 27, 1964, in Dhaka, Bangladesh to parents M Amir-ul Islam and Jahanara Amir. She studied at Holy Cross Girls School, United Nations International School, St. Francis Xavier’s Green Herald International School, and Scholastica. In 1990, she earned her law degree from the University of Buckingham and subsequently she was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn.

Career:

After returning to Bangladesh, Amir enrolled as an advocate of the High Court in 1991 and the Bangladesh Supreme Court in 1993. She founded and currently leads Amir & Amir Law Associates, where she provides legal services on various legal issues like foreign investors, infrastructure development, international finance, banking, corporate and commercial law, and constitutional matters.

Beyond her legal core practice arena, Amir is a human rights advocate, focusing on women’s empowerment, child rights, environmental issues, and consumer rights. She is widely known for her work on numerous Public Interest Litigations (PIL) and collaborates closely with various non-governmental organizations to advance these causes.

Throughout her career, Amir has received several accolades, including the Begum Rokeya Shining Personality Award in 2005 and the Gandhi Peace Award in 2009. She has also served as the chairman of the Private Rural Initiative Program (PRIP) Trust and has been involved with the Legal Education & Training Institute (LETI) of the Bangladesh Bar Council, conducting training programs on human rights and gender issues.

In the legal arena, Amir is best known for her involvement in significant cases, such as filing a petition against President Iajuddin Ahmed’s assumption of the caretaker government role in 2006 and representing the Bangladesh Tariqat Federation in a petition to remove the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

In November 2023, Amir and her father collected nomination papers from the Awami League for the constituencies of Kushtia-3 and Kushtia-4, respectively.
